Blind Ambition - January 2008

We named the foal Apollonia.

It is an Italian name which means wisdom and strength. Apollonia is doing really well. She has been moved back to the stall near all of the other horses. She is getting attached to them. Biggest who is right next to her is not to thrilled. I thought since she has been a PMU (Pregnant Mare Urine) broodmare she may take Apollonia under her wing. I would compare it to an old grumpy cat who now has to share the house with a 6 week old kitten. Biggest pretends that she does not like her but when she thinks we are not looking she is curious about the foal.

Willy, my 24 year old Quarter horse, is the most concerned with Apollonia. He nickers to her when she gets upset and puts his head over the wall to sniff her. She likes him. He is like a grandfather. Indy my other mare and Angus, Jim's Percheron Stallion, likes her too. Angus is surprisingly gentle with her when they sniff noses.

We began to turn her out in the paddocks. With the incredible amount of snowfall this year we do not leave her out alone if we are not home. The other horses are in neighboring paddocks to keep her company. We get her acquainted with the area by encouraging her to follow us around the fence line. She follows us by hearing our feet in the snow and our voice. She does great. She plays in the snow and has a great time being a kid. She comes when we call her. She loves to be outside. We recently got a new delivery of shavings. She loves to roll in the fresh snow and fresh bedding. I brought her out to the new pile of shavings and she dove right in. I mean head first and then rolled all the way down.
